What are DEXA Scans?

The DEXA, or “Dual X-ray Absorptiometry”, is a quick and pain free scan that can tell you a lot about your body. It provides you with an in-depth analysis of your fat tissue, lean mass and bone density.
The DEXA is a sleek, inconspicuous machine with an “arm” that branches out over the table that you lay on. Due to its open design patients can comfortably enjoy the test without feeling claustrophobic. It works by sending dual low power x-ray beams that can accurately and precisely differentiate between bone mineral, lean mass and fat mass.
The main goal of the DEXA is to provide you with an in-depth analysis of the main components of your body; fat, muscle and bone. After the scan, you will be given a multi-paged print out where you will see percentages, mass, and images accounting for the various data obtained.
The great thing about the DEXA scan is that it requires very minimal preparation and is fast (takes about 7-10 minutes). For more accurate results you should make sure you are well hydrated and not have any food in your stomach (at least 3 hours since your last meal).

What will my report look like?

How Do I Schedule My Scan?

To schedule your exam it is important that you follow these steps IN PRECISE ORDER.

Step 1 – Register: Have your parents complete this brief “Body Composition (DXA)” intake form authorizing you to get tested.

Step 2 – Check Availability: Go to this scheduling page , choose the “San Francisco – Storefront Location” at 295 Broadway, San Franciso, or a mobile testing truck in your area (limited times/dates) and find a day and time that works for you and your parents. Do NOT try and finalize the appointment from this screen. Your appointment needs to be finalized by Dr. Jay.

Step 3 – Text or call Dr. Jay 510-993-4307 with your desired appointment day and time along with the email address you used to register in Step 1.

Step 4 – Wait for final confirmation of your appointment.

What If I Need To Reschedule My Scan?

Scans can be rescheduled or cancelled up to 36 hours prior to your currently scheduled scan date and time. Simply Text or call Dr. Jay 510-993-4307 within 36 hours of your scheduled test letting him know that you need to cancel or reschedule. If rescheduling, please refer back to the scheduling page and find an alternative day and time that works for you and your parents.
**IMPORTANT!** Tests cannot be canceled or reschedule less than 36 hours before your scheduled test time. If you do not reschedule your scan in time or are a no-show for the appointment, then your scan credit will be lost with no refund.

Will working out right before the DEXA scan affect the accuracy of my results?

No, it will not. Working out before a DEXA scan often decreases your level of hydration. The accuracy of other methods of body fat testing, such as bioelectrical impedance, would be impacted by this, but the accuracy of BodySpec’s DEXA scanner is not. However, there may be changes on your body composition due to hydration differences that will be reflected in your scan, so you should try to scan under similar circumstances each time.

How should I prepare for my scan? What should I wear?

Ideally, just wear your regular workout clothes. Try and avoid clothing with metal, such as zippers in jeans. Please note that all clients are required to wear at least one layer of clothing on top of their underwear for the scan.
Additionally, for maximum accuracy, you’ll want to do the scan under the same circumstances each time. So if you fast for the first scan, you may want to fast for subsequent scans, so that changes in your body composition are a reflection of actual change, rather than the presence of food.

What are my options for getting to my test and is there parking?

You will be testing at BodySpec’s San Francisco brick and mortar location (295 Broadway, San Francisco). They are located on the corner of Broadway and Sansome in the Financial District (right on the edge of Jackson Square). It is about a 12 minute walk from the BART Montgomery stop. They do not have a dedicated parking lot, but there is street parking surrounding the area, and a number of surface lots on Broadway close to Embarcadero.
